As distinguished from the explicit or direct meaning (denotation) of the word exposed, the ideas or meanings associated with it or suggested by it (connotation) have a sound place in architecture and fashion. 'Exposed structure,' while currently extremely trendy, is a core concept of modern architecture. As the machine began to replace man at the turn of the 20th century, (thankfully) architects responded and reacted in a way that allowed architecture to be "a machine for living" and for evolving. Letting elements speak for themselves is not just a visual expression of structure meeting architecture, but an ideology that embraces advancement and abstraction. The 'exposed seams' on this sweater, to me, represent just that - not a means to an end, but a means to question and challenge the norm in fashion design.
